NORMAN CLARK
Life Imagined as Art
Paintings and Works and Paper by Norman Clark, RWS (1913-1992)
Exhibition at 6 Mason's Yard, Duke Street, St James's, London SW1Y 6BU
30th May - 13th June 2024
This website is related to our exhibition of the work of Norman Clark - his first major retrospective outside of his native county of Sussex. Clark was once described by his tutor at the Royal Academy Schools, Thomas Monnington (later president of the Royal Academy) as "certainly one of the most interesting students at the Royal Academy schools in the two years I have been teaching there." Certainly, the catalogue of prizes awarded to him as a student there bear witness to this and yet for the most part Clark eschewed the pursuit and fame of the full-time painter for the role of the teacher - inspiring generations of students at Brighton College of Art (and later Brighton Polytechnic).
The majority of the works on this website come directly from the artist's studio and many are being shown in public for the first time.
Our catalogue for the related exhibition is available from the middle of May 2024. More information on this event is also available from our website:
